Candles were used for illumination for nearly 5000 years. During most of history, the candles available to ordinary people, which were made of tallow, had various disadvantages. Their most serious disadvantage was their offensive odor. In the early 1880s, Chevreul, a French chemist, pursued research into fat and its chemical properties. As a result of intensive efforts, he succeeded in separating out fatty acids and used them in making candles. Candles made of fatty acids were harder and brighter than those made of tallow, but the absence of offensive odor pleased users the most. The improvement in candles exerted a major influence on people's lives.
